UNIQUE JOURNEY: Vet Rides Tractor Through Iowa
A Nebraska Veteran is making a unique journey through the state of Iowa.
Jerry Hoge is making the 300 miles trek across the state to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
In Iowa it’s nothing new seeing a tractor riding down the road, but one towing a riding lawn mower is unusual.
“I'm not crazy but it's just something that you got to do what you got to do,” says Hoge.
Hoge is riding through Iowa to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause that’s close to his heart.
“It's pretty neat, it's a spiritual thing, you have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything,” says Hoge.
Hoge’s nephew Sgt. Nicholas Patterson was killed in Iraq in 2007. This ride is Hoge’s way of honoring his sacrifice.
“It feels good that I’m actually doing something,” says Hoge.
The Veteran built the custom hot-rod lawnmower he’s towing, one that he will raffle off at the end of his journey.
“It's one of those things I’ve always planned on doing and I finally did it,” says Hoge.
Hoge’s journey started in Omaha with stops in Atlantic, Winterset, Oskaloosa, Muscatine and ending in Eldridge. He’s making the trip going just 25 miles per hour.
“It's been really nice, I pull over for them and they pass and honk, high-five, there's a lot of people out here that are really into this,” says Hoge.
A little rain in the forecast wasn’t going to slow Hoge down. He’s determined to finish his journey raising money and awareness for Veterans just in time for Memorial Day.
“No one person could do it, but maybe something crazy like this maybe it will work out that more people will do something next year,” says Hoge.
Hoge has a goal of raising $20,000 during his journey, so far he’s raised around $9,000.
