Playground Dedication at Blank Children’s Hospital
Blank Children’s Hospital dedicated a new playground in honor of an 11-year-old Ankeny girl.
“We’re just amazed and we love it. It’s bright and crazy and fun and it’s just Erin,” says dad Matt Moomey.
Last summer, his daughter, Erin, spent just about every day in the courtyard park at the hospital. Being outside gave her a break from the Leukemia treatments, but the playground in the park was old and didn’t get much use. Now, she is giving other kids a fun escape.
“It’s such a great tribute to Erin and her family has worked so hard and I know this has just been so important to them,” says Alissa McKinney, Director of Development at Blank Children’s Hospital.
After the 5th grader lost her battle with Leukemia in October, the project took on a life of its own. This spring, family and friends held the first annual Sparkle Run and raised more than half of the $50,000 for the project.
“My wife never doubted it. I, on the other hand, questioned it a little bit, but she was after it and got it done,” says Moomey.
“We all know the story and we are very humbled,” says McKinney.
The Moomey family plans to keep raising money for other projects in the community.
