WEST DES MOINES, Iowa –Your pet can help one woman reach a big fundraising goal.
Vicki Breckenridge is trying to raise $30,000 this year for the American Diabetes Association in honor of her 30th Anniversary of living with Type 1 Diabetes. She says, “I was diagnosed 15 days before I turned 30, and so I’ve had it 30 years now. I just turned 60, and I found it on a routine health screen.”
Technology has helped her live with diabetes without any complications. She got an insulin pump 15 years ago. She started using a continuous glucose monitoring system five years ago. She says, “Why it’s helped save my life is it will alarm when my blood sugar goes low, and so that way I can make a correction, eat something, turn my pump down.”
The American Diabetes Association also helped by providing tools and knowledge. Now, she’s on a mission to give back. She wants to raise $30,000 for the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes. She’s relying on family, friends, businesses and even pets to help her reach the goal.
The Jordan Creek Animal Hospital in West Des Moines is hosting an event this Saturday. Christina Powell with the clinic says, “This Saturday we are actually having our 3rd of 4 nail trims to support the American Diabetes Association.”
For a minimum $5 donation, pet owners can get their cat’s or dog’s nails trimmed. The nail trimmings are Saturday, August 30th and September 6th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The past two events raised about $500. Powell says, “We want to try and raise as much as we can to help Vicki get to her $30,000. Anything we can raise I think will help.”
The Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes is Saturday, September 20th at Principal Park. Registration/check in is at 9 a.m. A 5K or 1 mile walk starts at 10 a.m. It’s followed by a healthy tailgate provided by Hy-Vee Chefs and Dietitians.Pets Help Woman Raise Money to Mark Milestone
