PATIO PAYOFF: Seasonal Jobs Boost
The Iowa Restaurant Association projects 5,000 new seasonal jobs are available this summer.
IRA President and CEO, Jessica Dunker, says a boost in the economy allows for more people to eat out and spend money, especially during the summer months.
“People are starting to feel like they have a little more disposable income they can be using.”
Outdoor patio seating is the industry’s main appeal. In the Des Moines metro there are more than 130 patio restaurants and bars. Due to outdoor seating, restaurant managers, say the number of patrons doubles.
Dios Rios Cantina and Tequila Lounge manager Brian Edwards says they double their wait staff to keep up.
“Usually in the winter time we staff 8 -10 people solely inside. This summer we’re up to 16.”
Mangers say they are likely to hire their summer staff on full time, continuing to make the hospitality industry one of the fastest growing.
When it comes to seasonal jobs, the food industry ranks second. Construction jobs account for the most.
