Martensdale Neighbors Ride Out Storm
Clean up has started in Martensdale where a storm left a big mess behind.
Debbie lash farms 23 acres off highway 92 and 50th Avenue.
Lash knew the storm was coming and had called her neighbor’s son William Bruere over to help get her home secured.
“He was going to come over and put the garage door down because the electricity had gone out and that's when I looked up and the clouds were whirling, he was backing up he knew it was coming,” says Lash.
Bruere hadn’t even madphoto 1e it to Lash’s when he saw the storm coming.
“Got right here in front of the shed and we saw it spiraling out here in the field with leaves going up into the sky so threw it in reverse to get back to the basement and the back end of the pickup kept coming off the ground,” says Bruere.
Lash had no choice but to take cover in her own home which doesn’t have a basement.
“Went back in the mud room and rode it out,” says Lash.
Bruere barely made it back across the street when the storm hit his parents home.photo 2
“That's when part of the sun-room from back of the house blew over the main house as we were going in. I guess the rest is history we were downstairs and now we have a little bit of a mess,” says Bruere.
Turns out the roof of Bruere’s work shed ended up across the street at Lash’s.
Insulation and metal wrapped around the home, trees and crops damaging her windows, shed and garage.
Bruere’s parents lost their sun-room and his two-year old work shed full of tractors, vehicles and farm equipment is destroyed.
But no ophoto 3ne was hurt, and both Lash and Bruere say that’s what they have to focus on.
“Everyone is fine in our family and the neighbors fine and now it's just the cleaning up part,” says Bruere.
“At least everybody is okay, its stuff it can be replaced,” says Lash.
Crews will be surveying the damage tomorrow to determine if a tornado hit Martensdale.
