Ice Bucket Challenge Paying Off Locally
The popularity of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is not only paying off at a national level, but also here in Iowa.
To date, the ALS Association has raised $62,000,000 dollars as a result of the social media craze. The local chapter in Iowa has raised $105,000 dollars since the challenge begin. That is three times more money than was raised locally during the same time frame last year.
The big fundraiser for the Iowa chapter is its “Walk to Defeat ALS” in October.
Organizers say support for that is up, too.
“The Walk to Defeat ALS last year at this time, we had about 400 people registered for it. This year we have almost 600. We’ve had a huge increase in the amount of people registering for the walk,” said Sara Lettow, the development manager for the ALS Association Central Iowa Chapter.
The ALS Association estimates there are 250 Iowans living with the disease.
The “Walk to Defeat ALS” is October 4th at 10 AM at Principal Park in Des Moines.
