Fair Weather Usually Not as Warm as You May Think

For many people, “typical” fair weather tends to be a little too toasty for comfort.

“I always think of it as really hot,” said Mindy Holder, a fair goer.

If warm is the norm, this year must be a blessing.

“Coming over, I was thinking this was a great day to go to the fair. It’s a little overcast. It’s not too hot,” said Jim Pioch.

Minus a little bit of rain to kick off the fair, the three day average of the high and low temperature is a comfortable 72 degrees.

It’s warm enough to keep cold drinks in high demand and cool enough to keep the whole family happy.

“Everyone is really thirsty, wants some ice cream to settle and a cold root beer,” said Coltyn Hunter, an employee at the A&W Root Beer stand.

As it turns out, weather at the fair is usually pretty pleasant.

According to a study of fair weather by NOAA, the average temperature the past thirty years has been 73 degrees, with the average high a tolerable 82. That’s not far from what we’ve seen the first few days.

Of course, there have been extremes which may lead people to think fair weather is warmer than it really is.

In 1983, all six of the one hundred degree days that have occurred in the fair’s history took place with a scalding, fair record high of 108.

Fair weather can also be down-right chilly. In 2004, the average temperature was just 65 degrees.
