Damage in Martensdale Not Caused by Tornado
The National Weather Service said damage in Martinsdale from Monday’s storms was not caused by a tornado. It was caused by straight line winds.
That’s surprising to Dennis Morris. The winds blew down his 130-year old barn, reducing it to rubble. Thick beams that stood for generations were split like toothpicks. But the one thing Morris treasured most about the barn was not destroyed. We were there when he found it. “One of the cool things we discovered when we bought the property was initials from some of the former owners,” Morris said, pointing to a piece of wood. “And if you look close here, “DW” is etched in there, and it was 18th of June 1913. Then somebody put “HS” in there also.”
The National Weather Service said three tornadoes did touch down in Iowa Monday night. EF-1 storms hit in Adair and Madison Counties. An EF-2 tornado touched down in Tama county.
