Crews Race to Finish Road Repairs Near Fairgounds
The Iowa State Fair begins on Thursday and construction crews are scrambling to finish their project before the fair starts.
Crews began working on a street improvement project in the intersection of East 30th and Dean Avenue in the spring. The intersection sits at the southwest corner of the fairgrounds; a busy area during fair time.
City deputy engineer, Pam Cooksey, says at one point the project fell behind schedule but should be completed within 48 hours.
“Asphalt paving is tomorrow [Tuesday], striping is after that and then they`ll be cutting loops in the pavement for the signals and open to traffic Wednesday night. That’s our plan.”
The DART bus “fair shuttle” location on East 13th is also under construction. DART spokesperson, Gunnar Olson, says the road closure could pose a detour but it’s unlikely.
“We are very adaptable to these things so we don`t anticipate any issues.”
DART is offering shuttle rides from three locations: the State Capitol, Center Street in Des Moines and Southeast Polk High School.
Adults can ride round-trip for $2 or for $1 with an advance state fair ticket. Children five years old and younger ride free.
