City Extends Deadline to Fix Up Apartment Building
The city of Des Moines is giving the new manager of a Sherman Hill apartment building one more week to bring it into compliance. Last month, tenants were ordered to vacate after owner Kirk Blunck, a prominent local architect, ignored several demands to fix the property up.
Since that order came down, there have been significant repairs.
“All of the health and safety issues have been complied with, electrical; plumbing; mechanical. There’s some other issues that aren’t health and safety issues that need to be addressed,” said Des Moines Neighborhood Inspection Zoning Administrator SuAnn Donovan.
Building manager Matt Funk agrees, all of the safety issues have been addressed. “It’s cosmetic. It’s just down to cosmetic,” Funk said. “We’ve only got five tenants left. I don’t see much sense in making five tenants move out because of some cosmetic issues.”
