Ames Prepares for Potential Flooding, Iowa State Erects Flood Walls
Heavy rains caused the Skunk River to top its banks in Ames. The river was expected crest Tuesday afternoon at just above 23 feet.
The water has spilled over into city parks, but officials no homes or businesses are in its path. “The rainfall really kind of brought things right up to the level that it was going to be a concern, but didn’t quite go over the threshold,” says John Dunn, Ames Water Plant Director.
Iowa State University is preparing for potential flooding by putting up the flood walls at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State Athletics Department said the Squaw Creek in Ames is supposed to crest at 10 to 11 feet.
Hilton won’t flood until the creek reaches 15 feet but the university didn’t want to take any risks.
The walls will remains in place for several days until the flood risk passes. The flood walls were bought after Hilton flooded in August of 2010.
