Adaptive Sports Helps Physically Disabled Athletes Experience RAGBRAI

Day four of RAGBRAI took riders from Forest City to Mason City.

Cyclists had a short day Wednesday, putting in around 40 miles and making stops in Ventura and Clear Lake.

Along the route we caught up with Adaptive Iowa out of Des Moines. The group brings sports programs to physically disabled athletes.

This is the organization’s fourth time on RAGBRAI and this year brought 30 people with disabilities and 30 helpers.

Mike Boone with Adaptive Sports Iowa says he’s glad he was able to help so many athletes experience what RAGBRAI is all about.

“Being out here there is nothing like it,  you see thousands of bikes out here it’s a pretty overwhelming experience for sure it’s a positive so being able to allow them to be out here without the stresses that go on with a normal daily life is great for them for sure,” says Boone. “Whenever we can take an individual with a disability and put them in a scenario they thought was not possible by moving the right pieces into place and giving them that opportunity it changes everything.”

Thursday cyclists will leave Mason City and travel the 65 miles to Waverly.
